The Kentucky-Louisville Rivalry is regarded among the best in all of college sports, especially within college basketball.

The Governor's Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals, and is a reference to the rivalry itself. After first being played in 1912, the rivalry was only played six more times before being suspended in 1924. It would be another 70 years before the two schools - separated by only 80 miles on I-64, and the two major cities of the state of Kentucky - would play again in 1994.

In college basketball the rivalry is highly regarded, though the teams played sparsely until 1984 when they began to meet annually. The teams meet every year in late December or early January, and occasionally even meet in the NCAA Tournament, adding more fuel to an already bitter feud. In basketball the rivalry is often referred to as the “Battle for the Bluegrass”.
